JUDY FOXSculptor Senior Critic, New York Academy of Art BIOGRAPHY Judy Fox is a sculptor who lives and works in the Hudson Valley. Her work has received awards from The National Endowment for the Arts, Anonymous was a Woman, The American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Guggenheim Foundation. She has been a speaker and visiting artist at various institutions and conferences in the U.S. and abroad, and is currently a professor and Senior Critic at the New York Academy of Art. She is represented by Nancy Hoffman Gallery in New York City. As an undergraduate Fox studied biology and sculpture at Yale and Skowhegan. She received an MA in Art History and Conservation from the Institute of Fine Arts at NYU. Studying the ways that various historical styles of representation displayed the beliefs and values of artists and their societies, she recognized a power in human imagery that was untapped at the time. Polychrome statuary of the gothic period inspired her to develop her signature style of precise portraiture and layered color, which she used to shine a contemporary light on specific icons of cultural histories. Fox began showing her work in the East Village in the1980's as a pioneer of painted figuration, rendering nude children in mythological poses and period coiffure. While her work became known internationally for its diverse subjects and feminist approach, the figures have since met with ambivalence in the American art world, as nudity, sexuality, and race became increasingly controversial. Judy Fox's more recent work has included surrealist life forms that are infused with human emotion. She continues to explore biological imperatives and the uncomfortable coexistence of our animal and cultural natures.
